How to fix this gutter under the balcony roof?

we have this gutter that is rusting and peeling. It's leaking.

Trouble is as you can see it's under the polycarbonate roof.

How can we fix this?

Also we tried putting some tape over it but that hasn't stopped the leak.

Replacing the gutter isn't straightforward as access is not easy as it's a double storeyed house.

Any thought?

Re: How to fix this gutter under the balcony roof?

Hi @nishtha,

What sort of tape did you apply to it, and did you clean the area thoroughly first and then sand it back so there was no peeling paint? Your image isn't quite high enough quality for me to see the level of deterioration of the metal, but provided you scrape back the paint and sand the area so it is smooth, you should have success applying CAgroup 50mm x 10m Weatherproof Byute Flash Flashing Tape. You can un-roll a suitable length and leave it in the sun for 30 minutes, black side up, to become tacky before applying. Make sure to avoid air bubbles and really push it down, smoothing the surface and ensuring a good bond.

Ultimately you're going to have to look at employing the services of a professional at some stage to remove the sheets and replace the gutter.

Remember your PPE, including safety glasses, a face mask and gloves.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

If they didn't seal the leak, then the water is somehow bypassing them @nishtha. You can try again with the method I've explained above, or you might like to remove the tape and show us the area where it is leaking so we have a better idea of methods that could work.

Re: How to fix this gutter under the balcony roof?

I just got up the ladder and felt it.. the tape definitely hasn't been pressed hard.

This was done by my hubby so I don't know if he didn't press it hard to begin with or it's come loose over the couple of months it's been there.

I have two options right now

1. Place more tape in top of it in the opposite direction to how it's currently applied

2. Try and remove the tape but I worry I might damage the gutter in the process.

Any suggestions?

Also if I do this right how many years do you think I will buy?. We just bought the house and plan to live atleast 5 years in it.

Re: How to fix this gutter under the balcony roof?

It depends on how degraded the metal is, @nishtha. I can see from the image that it isn't adhered to well, as you've discovered. I don't think it's going to do additional damage if removed. He might have applied it over loose paint, which has since delaminated and allowed the tape to come off, or he might have applied it cold and found it hard to stick. I'd remove it, clean the area, and re-apply the tape warm.

If it bonds well, you might get five years out of it, or you could need to replace it periodically.

Amazing..

I am going to try and remove it now

My final question for now is how do I warm the tape?

We are in Melbourne and it's cold :unhappy:

Re: How to fix this gutter under the balcony roof?

a hair dryer should do the trick to warm the tape, especially for those smaller pieces

The tape is out @MitchellMc .

tomorrow morning my plan is to 1. warm up the tape using the hair dryer

2. Clean and peel off the old paint

2. Apply it the same direction like before.

Do you think we need to do anything to the rust prior to applying the tape?

am also at a loss to understand why is the left side so much worse than the right side?
