How to glue plasterboard to masonry?

Hey Guys, i'm not sure what product i should be using to glue to plasterboard to masonry - i'm building a casement for my windows and therefore need to stick the plasterboard to the masonry to build the reveals and jambs - Can anyone suggest what i need. I've had a look on Bunnings site and saw Gyprock CSR 20kg Drywall Masonry Adhesive but it  has a low rating.  Any ideas are much appreciated. 🙏👀

Re: How to glue plasterboard to masonry?

Hi @elbow,

As per the Gyprock installation guide, Gyprock CSR 20kg Drywall Masonry Adhesive is the correct product to use for your purposes. I note the one review on the product, but I can assure you it's used successfully on thousands of installations yearly. Remember that you need to apply it to the sheet and fix the sheet in position as soon as possible. It's not a product where you can apply it, go have a cup of tea, and then return to fix it in position. Alternatively, you can use Gyprock CSR 1kg Acrylic Stud Adhesive in combination with fixings. However, once again, as soon as you have applied the adhesive the sheet needs to be positioned on the wall.

You will find details for both fixing methods in the guide above.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Mitchell

Re: How to glue plasterboard to masonry?

Hi Mitchel. I have the same scenario I need to drywall my kitchen that has block wall. It’s exterior wall. Shall I use regular gyprock or any moisture resistant one. Also do I need a mechanical fastening. My ceiling is 2630 high.
once completed will it be ok to hang the cabinets through to the block itself using masonry screws and it won’t affect the integrity of the drywall installation.
thanks in advance

Re: How to glue plasterboard to masonry?

Hi @sankara,

Thank you for your question about how to attach plasterboard to a block wall.

I'd encourage you to read through pages 33-35 of Gyprock The Red Book #2 Residential Installation as it outlines the specific method called for by the manufacturer.

As it is an exterior wall, condensation can develop due to the difference in temperature between the inside and outside. I can't find an explicit direction from the manufacturer for moisture-resistant gyprock to be used, but for peace of mind, it would be a good idea to use it. I suggest you use Gyprock CSR Aquachek™

While not possible in all applications, it's always best to mechanically fasten the plasterboard alongside adhesive. Using both will give the best connection, whether it is to masonry or timber. This being said it is not necessary to mechanically fasten the plasterboard if the instructions on pages 33-35 of the CSR Redbook are followed.

If you wanted to mechanically fasten the plasterboard alongside the masonry adhesive, you can use Ramset Black Countersunk Masonry Screws with a pre-drilled hole of a suitable size, as defined by Ramset.

Using masonry screws will not affect the integrity of the drywall installation assuming you pre-drill the holes correctly and don't over-tighten them. Over-tightening a masonry anchor can cause it to pull through the paper face of the plasterboard. While not catastrophic to the integrity of the plasterboard, it can fracture the gypsum on the inside of the board, which cannot be reversed.

If you are careful not to over tighten the screws and ensure that there is a good connection with the block wall, the weight of the cabinet will be transferred through the plasterboard and into the wall leaving the plasterboard intact.

It can be done, but it may be difficult enough that you would feel more comfortable having a trained professional carry out this installation. A cabinet maker, given the information that there is a block beneath the plasterboard, will have a method of installing the cabinets that they are comfortable putting there name to.

It would likely involve the use of masonry plugs such as these Green Wall Plugs, and a suitable number of screws to support the weight of the cabinet.

Let me know if you have any further questions, I am more than happy to help.
